I came across Ning some time ago courtesy of Sacral Musings, a network for student and qualified osteopaths which really impressed me with its functionality and useabiliy. It's a really nice, hosted solution that takes all the best features of Facebook including photo and video uploads, chatroom and forums and lets you focus around a particular subject.
Having set this up, I'm really keen to get it working for us as both an internal communication tool, company extranet and way of getting to know some of our clients better. It's going to be very much about Metafocus and who we are, so it has a lot of potential as a marketing tool too.
Plus, all links aren't 'nofollow' so we can abuse that too :)
